The adverse weather conditions that have been sweeping across Europe over the last few months have seriously affected the harvest in in le Puy-en-Velay region of central France. This follows on from previous poor harvests and with competition from more robust crops many farmers this year have planted approximately 18% less acres of lentils, further reducing this year’s Puy crop. In 2005 the harvest produced 3189 tonnes for lentils compared to 1430 in 2012. As a direct result of this, there will be a decline in the availability of Puy Lentils on the supermarket shelves in the coming months and what is there will be more expensive.
In a bid to address this issue, Leathams have been looking into the possibility of adding Lentille Verte du Berry’s to their MERCHANT GOURMET® brand. Sanjay Davda, Head of Grocery, highlighted the research that is being conducted by the company in a bid to bring the product to market. With a similar and distinctive taste to Puy lentils, Lentille Verte du Berry, offer a delicate, peppery and nutty flavour, and like their neighbour, possess a solid consistency. Grown from Ancia lentil seed, this high quality product has a firm texture and boasts subtle flavours.
“We are achieving year on year growth with our MERCHANT GOURMET® Puy Lentils range and this is not only because it is a high quality product, but it is also due to the increasing popularity of premium lentils in the UK. People want convenient food without having to compromise on taste and quality. As a result we have been researching alternatives and there is a possibility that we may be expanding our range of lentils and grains.”
“Lentille Verte du Berry, are an authentic lentil which originate 180 miles northwest of the Le Puy-en Velay region. This lentil is accredited IPG (Protected Geographical indication); this refers to a product originated in a region, a specific quality, reputation and other characteristics attributable to its local area and also to the process of production. This lentil is identified and checked from the fields to packaging by the accreditor “Label Rouge” which is the highest French sign of quality. As a result, this is a fantastic alternative to Puy as the flavours are very similar. If we are going to bring in a new line, it is essential for us to introduce an end product that tastes, looks and behaves in a similar way as Puy.” said Davda.
The introduction of Lentille Verte du Berry should not be misinterpreted as an end to MERCHANT GOURMET® Puy Lentils Davda said:
“We are mindful that the research we are conducting around launching a new line may project the image that we are no longer supplying MERCHANT GOURMET® Puy Lentils. This is not the case. We believe that taking this practical action to ensure that our customers continue to enjoy the quality ingredients that they have become accustomed to is essential. This is a very interesting time for us as the introduction of Lentille Verte du Berry could be extremely exciting addition to our MERCHANT GOURMET® brand.”
